Polypropylene String-Wound Sediment Filter
Cleaner water starts at the front door of your home. Hydrana's polypropylene string-wound sediment filter helps reduce dirt, sand, rust, and other suspended particles before they reach your faucets, showers, appliances, and water-using fixtures.
Made with high-quality, zero-foaming polypropylene yarn in a durable string-wound design, it's a straightforward whole-house replacement cartridge for homeowners who want dependable sediment filtration at an everyday value.
How to pick the right one — your variant is Length / Diameter / Micron:
- Length — 10" or 20": Measure your old cartridge top to bottom, or check your housing size.
- Diameter — 2.5" or 4.5": 2.5" is the standard slim housing size. 4.5" is the wider Big Blue style housing size.
- Micron — how fine it filters: Lower = finer. 50–100 micron for coarse sediment and heavy well-water grit, 20–30 micron for general whole-house sediment, 5–10 micron for finer dirt and rust, 1 micron for the finest sediment filtration in this line.
Key features:
- Helps capture dirt, sand, rust, and suspended particles
- Premium polypropylene string-wound construction
- Zero-foaming polypropylene yarn
- Available in 10" and 20" lengths, 2.5" and 4.5" diameters, and multiple micron ratings
Not sure which micron you had before? Check the printing on your old cartridge — matching the size and micron you already use is the safest place to start.

Whole-house sediment filter replacement for well water and city water
Searching for a sediment filter replacement usually starts with three things: your housing size, your micron rating, and the problem you are trying to solve. This Hydrana cartridge is a string-wound whole-house water filter cartridge that helps reduce dirt, sand, rust and other sediment before it reaches your faucets, showers, washing machine and water-using appliances. It is a popular fit for well water homes dealing with grit, cloudy water after rain, sand clogging faucet aerators, and cartridges that turn brown quickly, as well as city-water homes that want a dependable first stage of protection.
5 micron is the most popular choice — but stepped filtration works best
Most homeowners replace like-for-like, and 5 micron is the default buy for general whole-house use. If your well produces heavy grit, guides commonly teach a stepped approach: start coarse at 50–100 micron to catch sand and large sediment, move to 20–30 micron for general sediment, then finish at 5–10 micron for finer dirt and rust. Use 1 micron only as a final polishing stage — on silt-heavy water a 1 micron cartridge alone can clog fast and drop water pressure. If your current filter clogs in days or your pressure falls after a change, go one step coarser or add a coarse first stage rather than finer.
Fits standard and Big Blue housings — by size
Order by measurement, not by brand name. Choose 10 inch or 20 inch length, then 2.5 inch diameter for standard slim housings or 4.5 inch diameter for Big Blue style housings, in 1, 5, 10, 20, 30, 50 or 100 micron. That covers searches like 20 x 4.5 sediment filter 5 micron, 10 x 2.5 sediment filter, and big blue sediment filter 20 inch with one made-to-order cartridge. See the Sediment Filter Size & Cross-Reference Guide if your old cartridge is printed with another brand's model number.
How often to change it
Plan on a fresh cartridge every 3 to 6 months for most homes, sooner on dirty well water, and change it when you notice a 10–20 PSI pressure drop, lower flow, or visible loading. Every Hydrana cartridge is manufactured in the USA and made to order in the exact size and micron you choose, so the combination you need is always available. Not sure which micron you need?
